Some positives to take away as Novice A Sens fall to Perth Lanark in season opener

The Novice A Senators opened the 2013-14 campaign on the road with a 6-3 loss to Perth Lanark.  Although the outcome was not what the young Osgoode squad had hoped for, there were many positives to feel good about. First and foremost, Coach Gillingham's team showed vast improvements in their positional play and there is every indication that big things are in store for this group as the season progresses.

The first goal of the Senators new season came at the 7:41 minute mark of the first period when rookie sensation, Anderson Hapke, picked up a loose puck on his own side of the red line and burst into the opposition team's zone dodging Lanark defenders left and right before feeding 2nd year sharp-shooter, Jackson Hurst, with a Crosby-like pass to the right of the high slot. Hurst powered his way to the top of the crease with three quick strides before firing home his second goal in as many games. Hurst had earlier tweeted out that "he was comin' in HOT, Ottawa", and, clearly, he is a young man of his word.

Following a few quick goals by the Perth Lanark side, Sens fans were treated to some big saves by their goaltender which led up to a highlight goal worthy of TSN TOP 10 status. On the play, Sens defenseman and Manotick native,  Coleson Kaluza, dangled his way through a host of Lanark players before firing a quick a wrist shot that found the top corner of the net and left the largely partisan crowd slack jawed and speechless while setting his own team bench into hysterics.  Senators coach, and Newfoundland native, Coach Blair, was heard screaming out, "Lord tunderin'!  Did you see dat byz??!"  Later in the game Kaluza followed up his earlier efforts with another spectacular play that resulted in him scoring his second goal of the game and now has many fans, both young and old, re-thinking their current hair styles to match the Bo Duke-like flow made famous by the stylish third grader.

Up next, the Sens play host to Carleton Place and look to exact some revenge for an earlier pre-season loss. Should be a barn burner folks.

Team Captain - Coach Gillingham and his staff saw it fit to honor Alex Tornberg with the 'C' to reward the two-way forward for his consistent effort in practice and his commitment to playing sound positional hockey in the exhibition games. Tornberg, who played LW on this night, showed a lot of hustle on the back-check and was rarely seen out of position in his own end. Well done Alex!

Johnny Hustle Hard Hat - The season's first Hard Hat was awarded to none other then the speedy two-goal man himself, Coleson Kaluza.  While the goals were a nice touch, the esteemed hard hat was awarded to Kaluza based on his Rudy-like efforts in his own end and his commitment to playing his position. Congrats Coleson!
